A Vietnamese woman on Monday had her death sentence commuted to 20 years in prison in Malaysia for drug charges, after proving that she was used only as a mule.
She was earlier found guilty of drug trafficking, but Malaysia's Federal Court on March 28 decided that Nguyen Thanh Ngoc Tuyet, mother of a 5-year-old girl, only acted as a drug mule.
28-year-old Tuyet was arrested with 2.1 kilograms of methamphetamine at the Penang International Airport in June 2011.
She first lost her appeal at the Court of Appeal in March last year, after receiving the death sentence in 2012.
But she was later allowed to bring in new evidence showing she was not aware that the bag she was carrying at the airport had drugs in it.
Two Vietnamese police officers testified that they recorded statements from a woman named Tran Thanh Tam, who said she had given the bag to Tuyen and told her that there were only sample clothes inside.
Tam is serving an eight-year sentence in Vietnam for selling drugs.
