A fisherman was fatally shot and another was injured after being attacked by pirate off the southern province of Kien Giang, a military officer said Saturday.
A fishing boat with an injured man arrived at the DK1/10 drilling rig at around 11 p.m. on September 11 to ask for support.
After first aid, the boat took the injured man to the shore for further treatment, the officer said, adding that the serious injury was caused by gunshot.
The injured fisherman, 41-year-old Nguyen Hung Cuong of Kien Giang Province, said the incident happened at around 3 p.m. on September 11 when he and other fishermen on two boats were fishing in Vietnam’s water in the Thailand Gulf.
A high-speed boat approached and the people on board shot at the Vietnamese fishermen who were speeding to run away, Cuong said.
A pilot, 38-year-old Sinh, was shot in his head and died on the spot while Cuong suffered a broken thigh.
“They are equipped with machine guns to shot and seriously damaged our boats. The boats are still full of bullets,” Cuong said.
