A senior police officer in the central province of Thanh Hoa has been suspended and detained for investigation under drug trafficking charges.
Lo Van Khiem, chief police officer of a commune in the province, was caught by local police on December 28 with 600 pills of methamphetamine.
Khiem said he was bringing the pills to the province’s downtown to sell them.
Vietnam has some of the world’s toughest drug laws. Those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty.
The production or sale of 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal narcotics is also punishable by death.
