An drunk-driving policeman who killed a woman and injured another in a crash last December was sentenced to four years and six months in prison by a court in Hanoi Friday.
Le Duc Hien, 25, was an officer in Bac Tu Liem District, Hanoi when he crashed his car into a motorbike ridden by two women, Vo Hoang Ngoc Mai and Nguyen Thi Minh Thin, at 1 a.m. on Dec. 15, 2014.
He had drunk alcohol with friends and was driving them home, according to the indictment.
Hien "neither lowered his speed nor gave give way to Mai's motorbike," which was on his right, at an uncontrolled crossroad in Ba Dinh Dist., Hanoi, and hit the vehicle.
Mai, 22, died at the scene and Thin, 27, suffered severe injuries.
Hien left his car and fled after the crash, but gave himself up at 9 a.m. that morning.
He was found to have been driving under the influence of alcohol.
He compensated about VND600 million to the two victims' families, according to the People's Court of Hanoi
