A court in Binh Dinh Province in south central Vietnam Tuesday handed a life sentence to a former bank teller for embezzling nearly VND20 billion (US$960,000) from his bank to finance his gambling habit.
Huynh Chi Trung, who used to work in an Agribank branch in Tuy Phuoc District, Binh Dinh, had faked documents and forged the signatures of 20 customers between 2008 and 2011 to pocket the money.
He took advantage of a bank policy meant to make life easier for customers which allows them to do all transactions with a particular employee instead of going from counter to counter.
He gambled away at least VND100 million a night betting on football, prosecutors had told the court.
He also bet more than VND40 million everyday on "so de," an illegal numbers game based on the state lottery.
The court also ordered him to repay the money to the bank.
