A Ho Chi Minh City court Monday sentenced a bank employee to 19 years in jail for stealing around US$185,100 worth of cash meant for his bank's ATMs.

Ly Chi Nguyen, 33, of Techcombank stole VND3.9 billion in three months until March 2013 while managing 35 ATMs in the city's Go Vap District, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.

His job was to count cash and categorize them by denomination before taking them to the ATMs in the bank's vehicles, and to check the amount of cash in the ATMs every day.

But after the cash was counted at the bank and put in boxes to be taken to the ATMs, he would steal some money, mostly in big denominations like VND500,000.

His crime was discovered following a sudden check on March 13 when VND900 million was found missing in four ATMs.

Nguyen said he used the money in football match gambling.
