Police in the northern province of Lang Son on Monday arrested a man for smuggling 10 kilograms of heroin on a bus.
The 33-year-old suspect said he was paid VND100 million (US$4,500) to carry the drugs from Dak Lak Province in the Central Highlands.
He was supposed to deliver the batch to a man who would carry the drugs to China.
Vietnam has some of the world’s toughest drug laws. Those convicted of possessing or smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty.
The production or sale of 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal narcotics is also punishable by death.
