A military officer was arrested for killing a man during a hunting accident that occurred over the weekend in Binh Phuoc Province’s Bu Gia Map District.
Senior Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hoa, 44, was transferred to Military Zone 7 headquarters pending an investigation into the incident, a military source told Thanh Nien.
Hoa, head of the municipal Military Unit in Binh Long Province's namesake capitol, was accused of fatally shooting at Nguyen Van Thuan, a driver for the Binh Long People’s Committee.
According to Binh Phuoc police, Hoa and Thuan were part of a delegation from the Binh Long People’s Committee visiting soldiers at two border stations in Bu Gia Map District on Saturday, September 20.
After a party at the station, Hoa and Thuan took two guns and went into a forest in Bu Gia Map National Park to hunt wildlife at around 4:30 p.m.
Thuan ran into the forest after an animal, leaving Hoa behind, but returned soon afterward.
Then, sources say, Hoa tripped and accidentally shot Thuan.
Investigators say the bullet struck his carotid artery and he died on the spot.
Thuan’s family received his body on September 22 after the conclusion of a forensic autopsy.
