A Hanoi court Friday sentenced to two and half years in prison a young man who used a video clip to blackmail his ex-girlfriend into having sex with him.
Dao Van Cuong, 25, was found guilty of "statutory rape" and prosecutors first suggested a three year probation, news website VietNamNet reported.
The indictment said Cuong, a college student, persuaded his girlfriend, only identified as M., to have "break-up sex" in February 2011 when she wanted to end their six-year relationship.
Cuong recorded the act without the girl knowing, and threatened to post the clip on the Internet if she refused to have sex with him the later times.
Cuong and M. were high school classmates from Thanh Hoa Province, around 150 kilometers from Hanoi, and they went to different colleges in Hanoi.
They had forced sex three times between March and October 2011.
The girl refused once in November 2011, and Cuong sent a USB with the sex clip to her company, and she decided to report the blackmailing.
Her mother, who attended the trial, said M. had told her about the clip and she had many times talked to Cuong's parents who tried to persuade him to delete the clip in vain.
The mother said her daughter was depressed and in panic all the time that she was being blackmailed.
Cuong told the court he did what he did because he "still loves M. too much." The judge was not moved.
