Vietnam woman arrested for fake kidnap to con foreign husband

Ho Chi Minh City police have arrested a woman for allegedly enacting a fake kidnap drama to cheat her Taiwanese husband out of VND500 million (US$23,400).
According to the District 7 police, Hoang Nhu Nguyet, 43 called her husband Chiu Chih Kuan, 58, early Wednesday morning and told him to transfer the money to a bank account to save her from kidnappers.
She claimed to be held in a graveyard after being drugged the night before by a group of masked people and abducted when she got out of a taxi in front of the couple's house.
When she came to, the abductors ordered her to call him and threatened to kill her if he failed to pay, Nguyet told Chiu.
Chiu informed the police who launched an investigation and discovered that Nguyet herself owned the bank account.
On the police's instruction, Chiu transferred VND200 million to the account.
Later that day Nguyet came home and claimed that she managed to escape when the kidnappers were off guard.
Police took her in for questioning and arrested her after she confessed to the deed, saying she needed money for spending and paying off gambling debts.
