Ho Chi Minh City will host an international scientific conference Thursday to discuss security cooperation in the East Sea.
Orators from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, China, Australia, America, Britain, Norway and Canada will attend the conference, including Professor Carlyle A. Thayer from the Australia Defense Force Academy, VnExpress said.
Thayer has authored many speeches and papers on recent developments concerning the East Sea, which borders a number of Southeast Asian nations.
The sea, which is said to contain a bounty of natural resources, has become a hotbed of conflict in recent years.
The two-day conference will discuss issues concerning the security, prosperity and cooperation in the region, and legal issues concerning the East Sea.
In 2002, ASEAN and China signed the Declaration of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea calling for a peaceful resolution of sovereignty conflicts.
At the regional security conference in July, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said a peaceful resolution to the conflict is a matter of US interest. Clinton claimed that East Sea contains a number of crucial international shipping lines.
This is the second conference of its kind co-organized by the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam and Vietnam Bar Association. The first was held in Hanoi in 2009 and drew 50 local and foreign scholars.
