President Truong Tan Sang has ordered the release of more than 10,000 inmates, including 11 foreigners, as part of the annual National Day amnesty, the President Office announced at a Monday press briefing.
During this year's National Day amnesty, on September 2, 10,244 prisoners will be freed before their terms end and 219 people will have their jail terms suspended.
Eleven of the inmates to be freed are foreigners four Chinese, three Laotians, one American, one Canadian, one Indian and one Australian.
Last year, Vietnam released more than 17,000 inmates for the National Day amnesty.
Vietnam typically grants amnesty to prisoners on major national holidays, including the Lunar New Year (Tet) and the National Day.
