The Khanh Hoa People's Committee is coordinating with the Vu A Dinh Scholarship Fund to build a secondary school on Truong Sa Lon island in the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago.
At a meeting Tuesday to discuss construction plans Truong My Hoa, former Vietnamese vice president and currently president of the fund -- belonging to the Central Youth Union -- said the fund is raising donations for the purpose, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported
The school is expected to have five class rooms, a dormitory, a canteen and a sports area.
The total cost is expected to be around VND10 billion (US$480,000), and Phap Luat Thanh Pho Ho Chi Minh (HCMC law) newspaper is helping the fund raise the amount.
The Truong Sa District People's Committee will oversee construction, which is expected to be finished next June.
Le Xuan Than, deputy chairman of the Khanh Hoa People's Committee, said construction of two more schools on Song Tu Tay and Sinh Ton islands in the archipelago is under consideration.
"Children have to move to the mainland now for secondary school because the island only has a primary school," he said.
