A man running a private coaching class for school students in the northern province of Thai Nguyen will be fined VND3 million (US$143.47) and suspended from teaching for a year after a video clip of him caning two students was posted online last month.

A report on Dan Tri Wednesday quoted the province's Department of Education and Training as saying that Nguyen Trung Thanh, a math teacher, beat his two seventh-grade students with a stick on June 9.

He beat them because they repeatedly failed to do their homework, Cuong said.

Thanh had his students' families' consent to cane them, he said.

Many people who have children studying under Thanh did tell the media that they were agreeable to teachers using the cane to discipline students.

However, after the clip was posted online last month, many people criticized him saying his method was "cruel" and "unacceptable."

The two-minute clip shows Thanh's students lying on a table and he hitting them on their bottoms in turn.

Following public outrage, Thanh apologized to the two students, Cuong said.

He said though the beating did not take place at the center -- which was headed by Pham Minh Tuan -- but at Thanh's house, it was fined VND2 million. It was also shut because it was found operating without a license.
