A Hanoi trial on Friday sentenced a former senior police officer to 15 years in jail for embezzling more than VND12 billion (US$569,124) in housing funds for his subordinates.
Tran Minh Cuong, 50, who held the rank of Senior Lieutenant Colonel while serving at the Ministry of Public Security, was punished on charges of "abusing reliability to appropriate others’ property," news website VnExpress reported.
Cuong was assigned to deal with business partners interested in invest in a housing project for police officers in Hanoi.
He was not allowed to take money from the partners, but he still did so and promised to help speed up the application process to be allocated land for construction.
All the ill-gotten money came from one private company, which raised it from its own partners. Cuong told the company's owner Nguyen Thi Huong that the application had gone through all agencies required and was only waiting for the final say from Hanoi leaders. But investigations found it never went anywhere.
Cuong returned more than VND5 billion to the company after his actions were exposed.
His sentence has been reduced thanks to his good family record.
