Customs officials in the northern port city of Hai Phong seized more than one ton of ivory hidden in a shipment of charcoal on Saturday.
The invoice claimed the tusks were being shipped from Hong Kong to Du Huong Commerce and Construction Company in nearby Quang Ninh Province to be exported across the Chinese border, Tuoi Tre reported.
The tusks had been chopped into pieces, covered in black plastic bags and hidden among the charcoal.
The ivory trade has been illegal in Vietnam since the 1990s but police often seize smuggled shipments.
