People caught drinking alcohol at karaoke parlors may soon face fines of VND1-3 million (US$47.6-142.83), the government's website has quoted the culture ministry's draft decree as saying.

The fine recommended by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism in its recent draft decree is twice the previous one, according to the website.

Expected to take effect on July 1 this year, the draft also suggested increasing the fine for selling alcohol at karaoke parlors to VND3-5 million.

Karaoke parlors and discotheques found admitting drunken people entrance will also face higher fines, VND1-3 million, according to the news report.

The draft decree, which is currently polling public opinion, also seeks to raise fines for violations in other cultural, sports and tourism activities such as dancing, and organizing festivals and exhibitions.
