Police in the northern province of Quang Ninh Friday confiscated a large haul of some 80,000 packs of smuggled cigarettes worth VND2.5 billion (US$116,000).
They also arrested captain Bui Duc Thanh and nine other crew members, who were transporting the haul on a ship and failed to show any documents relating to the goods, for further investigations, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported on Saturday.
The crew told the police that they bought the cigarettes from another ship off Quang Ninh and planned to carry them into the country for sales.
Roughly one billion packs of cigarettes are smuggled into Vietnam every year, which causes a loss of about VND9 trillion ($416 million) to the state budget, the Vietnam Tobacco Association said last month.
