Fifty-six king cobras weighing a total of some 160 kilograms were found in a car when it was stopped by police for violating traffic laws in Hanoi on Friday, Vietnam News Agency reported.
The venomous snakes were found in green sacks in the car driven by Nguyen Van Hai, who told police that he had been hired by a person named Hop to transport them from the northern province of Vinh Phuc to Hanoi, according to the news report.
Hai, 30, said he was paid VND1 million (US$47.31) to deliver the snakes, which are protected from commercial use by Vietnamese law.
Police said Hai was driving the car with another man, when he was stopped on Phap Van Highway in Hoang Mai District.
But, the man, whose identity was not revealed, fled the scene as police checked Hai's documents, the report said.
