Elephant tusks brought by air from Russia seized in Hanoi's Noi Bai airport July 31

The Hanoi police are investigating the smuggling of more than 50 kilograms of ivory from Russia that they seized last Wednesday.

Customs officials at Noi Bai airport and the police found the tusks in the luggage of Trieu Viet Phong, 29, and Le Ngoc Dinh, 26, who were traveling with a 10-year-old girl and two younger boys.

They also brought more than 2,000 packs of Marlboro cigarettes without documents.

Vietnam News Agency quoted officials as saying that ivory smuggling by air has become rife as demand surges along with black market prices.

Le Van Nam, 27, and Le Viet Duong, 25, of Hanoi were recently caught at Noi Bai airport arriving from Singapore with 122.3 kg of ivory.

The ivory trade has been illegal in Vietnam since the 1990s.
