Traffic police from the Ministry of Public Security have identified 317 cars with diplomatic license plates that had expired but were still in use.
The findings came after a one-month inspection into such cars.
The cars have their registration licenses expired but their license plates have yet to be revoked.
The police said they are still considering punishment for such violations.
They said they will continue patrolling the streets of cities and provinces across the country until late this year to detect expired diplomatic cars.
License plates marked with the letters NG, NN or QT abbreviations for "foreign affairs" or "foreigners" in Vietnamese, are typically registered by foreign embassies and consulates in Vietnam.
According to statistics released by the Finance Ministry in 2010, there were 4,366 diplomatic cars in Vietnam. These included 230 undergoing procedures to be re-exported and 1,758 that are condemned or sold legally.
Of the rest, more than 1,200 cars are being driven illegally in the country, according to the ministry.
