Police in the central province of Ninh Thuan Sunday said they found nearly six kilograms of heroin in a car driven by two Laotians with whom they had exchanged gunfire Friday afternoon.
The seven-seat car with a Laos registered license number was confiscated after Vong Oudom Douangchanh was killed in the fight and Khamseng Vichitvongsa managed to get away, police said.
The Laotians were in the car when police asked them to stop in the province's Phan Rang Town at around 9 p.m. Thursday.
However, instead of stopping, the Laotians continued running at high speed to a dead end in Do Vinh District, where they had to get off the car and run into a corn field, according to the police.
At around 1 p.m. police found Vong Oudom Douangchanh in the field and a gun fight broke out.
While the Laotian was killed on the spot, two policemen were injured, they said, asking local people to stay alert as Khamseng Vichitvongsa was still at large.
The Laotians were allegedly part of a drug trafficking ring of foreigners that was being investigated on orders from the Ministry of Public Security, the police said.
Further investigations are ongoing, they added.
