A north-bound coach from the central province of Nghe An has been caught carrying 117 people, more than triple its capacity of 37 passengers.
The vehicle, driven by 30-year old Tran Van Phon, was accompanied by another 40-seater bus, which carried 74 passengers.
When traffic police tried to pull both the vehicles over in Thanh Hoa Province, not long after they started their 10-hour journey to Quang Ninh, the drivers speeded up.
They only stopped after a 30-minute police chase.
Police said they have suspended the driving licenses of the two drivers for 30 days. The owner of the vehicles was fined a total of VND123 million (US$6,200).
Six other buses were called up to take the left-behind passengers to their destination.
Thanh Hoa police said Wednesday they have caught more than 50 long distance coaches exceeding their passenger capacity since Sunday.
