Residents in the central province of Ha Tinh tipped off police on May 14 about two suspicious-looking individuals who later were arrested for allegedly transporting more than 10,000 methamphetamine pills.
Acting on the tip, police tracked the two suspects to a local hotel.
A search of their room yielded the thousands of red methamphetamine pills packed in multiple plastic bags and hidden in small cans of milk.
The two suspects, including Xi Ly Phon Tuy, a 31 year-old Lao man, and the 42-year old Vietnamese Nguyen Xuan Thanh, have admitted to having bought the methamphetamine in Laos.
They transported the pills through the Cha Lo border gate in the Quang Binh province. The drugs were brought to Ha Tinh to be sold and consumed.
Vietnam has some of the world’s toughest drug laws. Those convicted of possessing/smuggling 100 grams of heroin or cocaine or 300 grams of other drugs face capital punishment.
