Police in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi said Wednesday they have busted a gang allegedly trafficking fake currency bills and arrested four members.

They said they had apprehended Nguyen Thi Nga and her husband Dang Hai Long, both 39, with 2,488 counterfeit VND200,000 (US$9.6) notes in the northern province of Hai Duong on Tuesday.

Later that day they arrested Lam Thuy Hien, 28, and her husband Phuong Van Huy, 34, for transporting the money -- thought to be printed in China -- from Lang Son Province on the border to Hai Duong.

News website VnExpress quoted Nguyen Hung Linh, chief of the Ministry of Public Security's financial security department, as saying the police would keep a closer eye on the borders to prevent fake money from being brought in from other countries.

Nga and Long have been to prison in the past for circulating fake currency bills, the police said.

Police are investigating further.
