A newly-wed man was arrested in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on suspicion of child sex offences since his bride is just 14 years old, local police said Wednesday.
Tran Van Co, 21, is alleged of "having sexual intercourse with a child," an offense that carries jail terms of up to 10 years, the police said.
The teen bride, identified as Dang Thi Cam Ng., was born in 2000 and had dropped out of school after 6th grade, her father said.
She helps her mother sell fish at a local market and at the same time works at a coffee shop in O Mon District, where she me Co, a co-worker. After dating for just 10 days, Ng. moved in to live with Co.
They succeeded in persuading their parents to allow their marriage, with Co threatening to commit suicide and Ng. to never return home otherwise.
The two families organized a wedding for the couple on November 23 with about 120 guests who were their relatives and neighbors.
Local authorities were aware of the case the following day and requested for police investigation.
