Ho Chi Minh City police said Sunday they have arrested the organizer of the city's biggest cockfight gambling ring after a manhunt that lasted more than 18 months.

Truong Hoang Chien was caught on March 29 while hiding at a friend's house in the Mekong Delta's Tien Giang Province.

Chien has been hiding in different locations across the delta after escaping while police busted his operations inside the city's largest cemetery, Binh Hung Hoa, in September 2011.

Police arrested 99 people and seized around US$20,500 in Vietnamese currency and US dollars during a raid that was launched following residents' tip-offs. Chien escaped with at least two close subordinates.

Investigations found Chien had begun organizing the ring after serving his second jail term for gambling offences.
