Police in Ho Chi Minh City said Friday they had arrested two Filipinos wanted by Hanoi police for allegedly cheating a Japanese man out of over US$12,000, Tien Phong online newspaper reported.
According to HCMC police, Marcos Alberto Olitoquit and Shery Baloicanas Rosaldo have been handed over to Hanoi police who had been hunting them since September 17.
Initial police reports said that Olitoquit and Rosaldo met Takanori Yamaguchi, a tourist, in Hanoi on April 26, and invited him to gamble on card games, the news report said.
They invited him to a house in Ba Dinh District and played cards there until midnight when they convinced him to put all his money and valuables into a box for safekeeping. Takanori gave them $12,251.
Police said the Filipinos then told Yamaguchi that they would continue playing the next day.
All of them then sealed the box and signed the seal, before Rosaldo took it for safekeeping.
The next morning Yamaguchi found the box had been replaced with another one, and all of his property, as well as the two Filipinos, were nowhere to be found.
The Japanese tourist then informed Hanoi police.
