Police in the central province of Nghe An Friday arrested six people, including two Laotians, belonging to a drug trafficking gang and seized nearly 20 kilograms of heroin from them.
They had been keeping tabs on the gangsters for months and caught them in the neighboring Ha Tinh Province from where they had planned to take the drugs brought from Laos to China.
Officers found most of the drugs in a car the gangsters were traveling in, and the rest strewn on the roadside after the latter dumped them to get rid of the evidence.
The police are trying to find the rest of the gang.
Drug trafficking from Laos to Vietnam through the central mountainous region is rampant though the police have made many arrests this year.
Between April and early September they busted at least six trafficking operations, arresting several Laotians and Vietnamese and seizing dozens of kilograms of heroin.
The gangsters confessed to carrying hundreds of kilograms over years from Laos to Vietnam, sometimes even to China.
Vietnam has some of the world's toughest drug laws. Those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty.
