Police in central Vietnam said Tuesday they have busted a ring that smuggled 12 kilograms of gold into Vietnam.
Senior Lieutenant-colonel Tran Phuoc Huong, spokesman of the Police Department of Da Nang City, said police arrested two people who transported the gold in their car on May 23.
Police believed the two are members of a gold smuggling ring they have investigated since April. The illegal gold was sold to gold shops in Da Nang.
In Vietnam, the central bank holds a monopoly over imports of gold used as material to produce jewelries and gold bars.
Police did not reveal the suspects' identities but said the gold bars, which was estimated at VND10 billion (US$469,600), was brought into Vietnam from abroad.
The investigation is going on.
