Officials in Ca Mau Province punished a commune chairman on Friday for hosting his underage daughter’s wedding at the commune headquarters during office hours.
On Friday, the Phu Tan District inspection committee censured Le Cong Quan, vice chairman of Phu Thuan Commune, for the now notorious July 11 gathering, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.
Quan had provided "a poor example" the official censure noted.
Quan was fined VND750,000 (US$35) for violating statues on the age of consent--18 for women and 20 for men--the paper said.
His daughter is 16 years old and just completed the tenth grade last summer.
Quan sought help from district officials in the Mekong Delta province to change the girl’s year of birth to legalize her wedding, which he said was inspired by an unexpected pregnancy.
His request was rejected.
