Authorities in southern Vietnam have demoted a local official who was earlier caught playing cards during office hours.
Nguyen Van Vui, chairman of Hau Giang Province’s Vi Thuy District told local media on Sunday that his deputy spokesperson Nguyen Thanh Phong was stripped off his position.
Phong was disciplined after police caught him red-handed playing cards with four others, who were all traffic inspectors, at their office on February 18, the last day before the Lunar New Year holiday.
Police seized a total of VND 6.7 million at the make-do casino, but the officials only claimed to have gambling on VND 1.2 million.
Police imposed a VND1.5 million fine on each of the five violators, citing that the gambling money was not enough to press criminal charges against them.
