Police in the southern province of Binh Duong arrested a local tax official on Wednesday for allegedly running over two people and killing them on the spot that same day, Tuoi Tre reported.

Tran Van Phuoc, 49, chief of the Dau Tieng District Tax Bureau, was seen driving out of a beer restaurant before causing the accident, the newspaper quoted district police as saying.

He was then driving the state-owned car at an extremely high speed when he lost control and crashed into Tran Bich Phuc nearly one kilometer from the restaurant, police said.

Phuc, a 33-year-old employee of the Dau Tieng Urban Hygiene Team, was sweeping the street.

After that, the official plowed into Luu Tan Nhon, a lottery ticket seller, while the latter was riding on a bicycle in the same direction.

The car kept running for another 200 meters before stopping, according to the news report.

Phuoc turned himself in to police after the accident.

Police are investigating.
