A man was seriously injured Thursday after strong winds blew him off a bridge in Hanoi while he was holding a bunch of helium-filled balloons in his hands, the Dan Tri newswire reported.

The unusual accident happened at around 4 p.m. when Do Van Thuan, 24, drove a motorbike with his wife riding pillion, holding a large bunch of balloons, on Vinh Tuy Bridge.

The couple were on their way to Long Bien District to sell the balloons.

In the middle of the bridge, Thuan asked his wife to ride the bike herself while he held the balloons in his hands and walked as the wind was too strong.

But the winds blew him off along with the balloons. He was thrown off the bridge and dropped to the ground from a height of around 20 meters.

When local residents reached Thuan, he was lying on the ground, seriously injured.

He was rushed to hospital with heel and spinal injuries.
