Hanoi police said Monday they arrested a man who allegedly killed one of his Facebook friends in order to steal his motorbike and electronic devices, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.
Dang Van Cuong, 31, of Thanh Hoa Province faces murder and robbery charges.
On June 22, Nguyen Vu Vy, 39, of Hai Phong City was found dead in his rented apartment in Hanoi.
Police said Vy died from head injuries and found a five-kilogram dumbbell, which they later determined was the murder weapon, under his bed.
Initial police investigations found that Vy had an appointment several days earlier with Cuong, with whom he had been friends with on Facebook since last year.
They arrested Cuong on June 23 at his girlfriend's house in Hai Duong Province near Hanoi, where he had been hiding.
Cuong confessed to police he arrived in Hanoi on June 19 and stayed at Vy's apartment.
Due to his debts, he said he decided to kill Vy to rob him.
At around 5 a.m. on June 22, while Vy was sleeping, Cuong repeatedly struck Vy on the head with the dumbbell.
After Vy died, Cuong stole his motorbike, two mobile phones and a tablet computer.
He then pawned the motorbike for VND10 million (US$475) and took a bus to Hai Duong.
Police said Vy got divorced three years ago and had been living alone in the apartment prior to his death.
