A court in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang Tuesday sentenced a local man to life for sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.

Ho Van Binh, 54, of Cai Be District was also ordered to pay VND26.5 million (US$1,257) as compensation to the girl, his neighbor, identified only as N.T.M.C.

He was found guilty of "rape," a statutory charge for having sex with someone below 13.

According to the indictment, C., then 10, and some other children went to Binh's house on February 15, 2011.

After the others left, Binh had sexual intercourse with C.

Binh then continued the abuse, having sex with her more than 100 times over the next 21 months, giving her VND10,000-100,000 (47 cents-$4.7) each time.

It only stopped when he was caught red-handed on November 7, 2012, by Nguyen Minh Trung, C.'s uncle.

Binh was arrested and confessed to the police that he had also molested another neighbor, nine-year-old N.N.T.

In May this year the Tien Giang People's Court sentenced Binh to 20 years in jail.

C.'s family appealed the verdict.

On August 21 the Supreme People's Court ordered the Tien Giang court to hold a fresh trial, and this time Binh got life.
