A 37-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday for killing a salesman at a Ho Chi Minh City fashion shop and injuring four others after his girlfriend had quarreled with them.
At the HCMC People's Court, the judges said Nguyen Van Tri's actions were "violent" and "dangerous" and needed to be severely punished, but acknowledged that the victims were also at fault for attacking him first, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.
On December 26 last year Tri's girlfriend, Ly Thu Nga, 27, and her family visited Song Nhac shop in District 5 and picked up a quarrel with the sales staff.
She called Tri, telling him that they had offended her.
Tri soon arrived and began to argue with one of the workers, and was smacked by the latter. He went out, got a knife from his motorbike, and began to chase after the salesman.
The other employees entered the fray and attacked him with iron rods used to hang clothes.
Tri managed to knife five of them before fleeing.
Huynh Chi Thang, 26, one of the workers, succumbed to multiple stabs, while the others were hospitalized with injuries.
Tri, who was also injured, was arrested when he went to a local hospital for treatment later that day, Tuoi Tre reported.
