Vietnam man arrested for trying to take gun aboard flight

Ho Chi Minh City police have arrested a man who attempted to illegally transport a shotgun and ammunition on to a flight to the central highlands province of Dak Lak, a local official told Thanh Nien Wednesday.

Tran Buu Tri, 41, is being investigated on charges of "illegally keeping a military weapon," said Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Le Hoang Chau, deputy chief of Tan Binh District's police division.

Tri was caught carrying the gun and a magazine containing six bullets in his luggage as he completed procedures board a flight to Dak Lak Province's Buon Ma Thuot Town on Tuesday, he said.

The man, who is the director of a company in the southern province of Binh Duong, told police that he bought the gun from a Cambodian for US$500 for self-defense purposes in August last year.

Police are investigating.
