Police in Nghe An Province's Dien Chau District have detained a young man for allegedly kidnapping a neighbor girl with the intent to sell her for VND30 million (US$1,430).

Last Sunday morning, Luong Van Hung, 20, an Anh Son District resident, saw five-year-old Bui Thi Huyen at home alone and enticed her to go with him to buy some candy.

Hung took her to a motel in Dien Chau and planned to transport her by bus that evening to Quang Ninh Province over 440 kilometers away to sell the girl to an acquaintance identified only as Thuyen.

Huyen's parents, Bui Van Luu and Lang Thi Tam, called the police when they arrived home after work in the afternoon and did not see Huyen.

Acting on Dien Chau District residents' tip-offs, local police caught Hung at the motel at around 7 p.m. and rescued Huyen before the girl had been sold.

Police are investigating the case.

The plan was for Huyen to be trafficked to China, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.

China is a major destination for the trafficking of Vietnamese woman, children and newborn babies for marriage, labor exploitation, prostitution and adoption, while Vietnam is a primary source country, according to the United Nations Inter-agency Project on Human Trafficking.
