During this period, about 4,400 people were injured in 5,700 accidents, mostly road accidents.

While the number of accidents has reduced from the same period last year, casualties have increased with 51 more deaths and 240 injured .

The ministry said the number of vehicles plying the nation's roads has kept increasing with nearly 82,600 new cars and more than 1.17 million motorbikes registered last month.

This increases the number of vehicles in the country as of the end of May to nearly 1.8 million cars and more than 32.6 million motorbikes.

Approximately 1.3 million people die each year on the world's roads, and between 20 and 50 million suffer injuries, according to a World Health Organization' global status report on road safety in 2009.
