A court in the northern city of Hai Phong on Friday sentenced three drug addiction patients to between 2.5 and 4 years in jail for organizing 100 on a mass-escape from their rehabilitation center in April.

Nguyen Quoc Hung, 39, received four years, Nguyen Thanh Luan, 27, three years and two months, and Nguyen Quang Thien, 31, two and a half years, all charged with "fighting with officials on duty," Tien Phong newspaper reported.

Four others who directly helped in the escape, including its alleged planner Tran Xuan Chien, are still at large.

The escape was carried out after dinner. Two from the gang broke the center's door lock and others used knives from the kitchen to force the guards to let them leave.

Officials from the center, including the deputy director, failed to stop the uprising. The gate was opened and 92 other patients ran through it.

The patients were brought back the next day, after causing a sleepless night for people in the neighborhood.

It was the fourth such escape at the center, which has around 200 patients who were not sent by their families but are obliged to undergo rehabilitation programs as required by law.
