Officials check illegal air guns found aboard a boat at a Ho Chi Minh City port April 4

Officials from the General Customs Department on Monday opened an investigation into the smuggling of 104 air guns seized aboard a Vietnamese boat last month.

The guns, branded Sharp Innova and Sharp Tiger, were found together with more than 1,000 pellets and 105 mufflers on the boat approaching a port in Ho Chi Minh City.

Officials caught the crew members transferring 24 air guns, which are banned in Vietnam, into a smaller boat, and they found the rest when checking the first boat on April 4.

Five men aboard failed to present official documents for the cargo, saying they bought the items for around VND750 million ($35,760) million in Indonesia to resell in Vietnam.
