Major General Pham Minh Thang, deputy commander of the Military Zone 9, died on Saturday after his motorcycle collided with a container truck in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang.
The accident happened on 3 p.m. on Saturday when the motorcycle with Thang on the back was traveling on the National Highway No. 61 in Thanh Xuan Commune, local police said.
Thang, 55, and the motorcycle driver were rushed to a public hospital but the general later succumbed to the injuries.
The driver, an officer of the Can Tho Military Command, is in stable condition.
Lieutenant General Vo Van Tuan, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, said: “The passing of Major General Thang is a great loss to the High Command of the Military Zone 9 and the Vietnam People's Army.”
The Military Zone 9 is one of seven military zones of the Vietnam People's Army. It is tasked to build, manage and command armed forces defending the Mekong Delta region.
Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
Traffic crashes kill around 9,000 people in Vietnam every year, or almost 25 deaths per day, official figures show.
