The Vietnamese information ministry has fined four companies a total of VND1.74 billion (US$83,164) in cash for spreading spam, including fraudulent advertising and sex-related messages.

Hanoi-based Tinh Van Telecom Company was fined VND683 million ($32,664) for spamming and sending inappropriate messages syntactically.

Three others: Lac Hong Media, Ha Thanh and E-Way -- the two former from Hanoi and the latter from Ho Chi Minh City -- which are all partners, were punished for sending spams with fraudulent and sexual-arousing content.

Six companies, with a total of 120.7 million subscribers, are currently licensed to provide mobile phone service in Vietnam.

They work with 347 communication service providers which, in turn, work with tens of satellite companies that spread up to 10,000 spam messages to mobile phone subscribers per hour, officials said at an anti-spamming conference last November.
