Police in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi are investigating a case in which an ex-criminal tried to run over three police officers who had flagged down his car last week, news website VnExpress reported.

On July 4 a squad of officers in Long Bien District found a Chevrolet driven by Le Van Hai, 34, suspicious and ordered him to pull over.

At first he slowed down, but as he approached closer, Hai suddenly sped up and drove straight at two officers standing in front of the car. But, they managed to jump out of the way.

Ngo Hong Tuan, a third officer, then shouted at Hai to stop. But the man then tried to run over Tuan.

The officer almost managed to get out of the way but was injured by the car's rear-view mirror.

An unnamed officer was quoted as saying that around 10 other policemen chased after the car on motorbikes, at one point shooting in the air as a warning, but Hai ignored them and continued to speed.

It took the police 20 minutes to stop him.

The police said there were six other former convicts in the car, but did not elaborate.
