Two men, including a doctor in charge of a commune health center in Thanh Hoa Province, were arrested Sunday when they were trying to sell 300 grams of heroin, local police have said.
Cao Van Vuong, 47, head of the health center of Dien Thuong Commune of the north central province, and Nguyen Van Chu, 58, told the police they had paid VND150 million (more than US$7,000) to buy the drug from a person who lives in Quan Son District of the same province, which borders Laos.
Vietnam’s Penal Code demands that those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty, making the country one of the toughest in the world in terms of punishing drug crimes.
