Customs in Ho Chi Minh City announced Wednesday that they had discovered more than 4.2 kilograms of heroin in a postal shipment of heat rub cream intended for Australia.

According to the Customs Agency for Express Mail Service, the brown thick liquid drug was contained in 40 tubes of IcyHot that were among 140 tubes packed in a carton.

The suspicious tubes had their bottoms cut out and then their content replaced with heroin before being put intact mechanically, customs said.

The drugs, which weighed a total of 4.22 kilograms, were estimated to be worth VND15 billion (US$706,000).

Initial information is that the carton was declared as a gift. Its sender was declared as Le Minh Tam, who lives in District 4, and the receiver as Wendy Le in Cabramatta, a suburb in the state of New South Wales.

Local agencies are investigating the shipment further.

A Tan Son Nhat official admitted last November that the airport is a common gateway for drug criminals because it is a major airport in the region with a rapid increase in passengers over the past few years.

The airport serves about 150 international flights with more than 15,000 passengers and hundreds of tons of goods on a daily basis, he said.
