A Malaysian national was sentenced to three years in prison by a court in Hanoi Friday for using fake cards to buy a VND20-million (US$952) laptop.

According to the hearing held by Hanoi People's Court, on May 26, Choi Ming Kian, 25, used a card to buy the laptop at Pico Plaza.

As the shop's assistant had doubts about the card and called the bank supposed to have issued it to check, Choi attempted to run away, but was detained by security guards.

Police checking his hotel room later found that he had 21 fake cards of many banks across the world.

A report on the VnExpress newswire Friday said Choi told police that he owed debts of $6,000 in Malaysia, and his creditor forced him to use the fake cards to buy goods and transfer them to Malaysia.

The Malaysian also said that when he entered Vietnam, he was instructed on using fake cards to buy electronics items by a person assigned by his creditor, the report said.
