A Ho Chi Minh City court Monday sentenced a Frenchman to five months and 24 days for stealing a US$150 camera from a city shop.
But Olivier Le Roux, 27, was released after the trial since he had already been in a police lockup for that period following his arrest.
Le Roux told the court that he arrived in Vietnam last January and his camera had gone missing soon after from his hotel in De Tham Street, so he decided to steal one.
He went to a shop on Tran Hung Dao Street and asked the owner, Pham Duc Nguyen, to show him a camera. When Nguyen was busy converting the price into dong, Le Roux grabbed the camera and ran out.
But he was caught immediately by people on the street.
