More than three million out of 5.1 million pre-paid mobile phone subscriptions in Ho Chi Minh City are likely to be deactivated since they are not properly registered.

For the last three months the Ministry of Information and Communication and the city police have been checking pre-paid subscriptions, and failed to find information about three millon of them, news website VietNamNet reported.

Of the rest, some have been registered inaccurately, Nguyen Xuan Tru, deputy head of the ministry's Telecommunication Department, said.

The ministry would give service providers an opportunity to register them failing which the numbers would be deactivated soon, he said.

In 2009 the government brought in a regulation that all pre-paid subscribers had to register their personal information by the end of the year.

But it was mostly flouted.

Besides, there have been promotions galore from service providers that allow a person to own multiple numbers without registering any personal information.
